ALKOSENS probe with membrane carrier and membranes

ALKOSENS probe is a membrane probe for the measurement of certain volatile organic substances. It's operation is based upon the sweep gas pervaporation principle:

A carrier gas flows through a channel covered by two membranes at a precisely defined flow rate. When the properly conditioned membranes are submerged into a liquid containing a readily volatile component, this component permeates the membranes. The permeation rate is dependant on the concentration of the volatile component in the liquid. Providing that there is a constant carrier gas volume flow, a direct correlation exists between the concentration of the volatile component in the liquid and the concentration of that component in the carrier gas in the probe channel. In the sensor chamber, the vapor carrier gas mixture comes in contact with a semi-conductor based gas sensor. That changes it's electrical conductivity characteristics according to the concentration of the compound to be measured.

This measuring principle is based upon the selectivity of the semi-permeable membrane system which rejects low volatility substances like sugar and glycerine, as well as most organic substances including organic acids.

If easily volatilized components are present, i.e. ethanol and methanol, the system will not be able to differentiate between the various components, and will measure the combined concentrations.
